Welcome to the Website of the CAREN Project
The CAREN project aims to establish a high-capacity Internet network for research and education in Central Asia to provide the region with a gateway to global research collaboration. CAREN builds on the achievements of the Silk project which pioneered research networking in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
Thanks to the interconnection with its pan-European counterpart GÉANT, CAREN allows researchers, educators and students across the region not only to collaborate among each other but also to engage in exciting joint projects with their peers in Europe and in other parts of the world. Thus the Silk Road, the ancient commercial route between Asia and Europe, does not trade just goods but also ideas.
Operational since July 2010, CAREN currently interconnects scientists and students in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and now Kazakhstan, with Uzbekistan also a candidate country. The network will link over half a million users in more than 500 universities and research institutes.
