Welcome to the Website of the CAREN Project

The CAREN project aims to establish a high-capacity regional broadband Internet-based network for research and education in Central Asia to provide the region with a gateway to global research collaboration. CAREN builds on the achievements of the Silk project which pioneered research networking in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Originally deploying satellite technology, it more recently started to upgrade to fibre optics.

Thanks to the interconnection with its pan-European counterpart GÉANT, CAREN will allow researchers, educators and students across the region not only to collaborate among each other but also to engage in exciting joint projects with their peers in Europe and in other parts of the world.  Thus the Silk Road, the ancient trading link between Asia and Europe, does not trade just goods but also ideas

The CAREN network became operational on 1 July 2010 with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan as project partners. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are expected to join in due course.
